Another A Stitch In Time Discussion Post! Sorry it's so late today!
Chapter Twelve
Little Garak has no friends. He wants to make some, but he doesn't know how.
It's interesting that the cubby is some sort of sacred private space. I know that no students were allowed to look in someone else's cubby, but what about teachers? We used to have locker inspections all the time at school. No one with any brains at all hid contraband in their locker. (Needless to say, it was found quite often)
Anyway, Garak's made Mila a home in his cubby and he goes to look at him when he's lonely.
Huh. More developed ridges seem to be a mark of physical maturity. I remember from TNG seeing the very tiny Cardassian girl, she had very smooth ridges, but I'd just assumed an actress so young couldn't handle the full makeup and Cardassians just grew into them or something.
The Cardassian Boogeyman is called the Mogrund. The Legends of the Ferengi book called it the 'Nameless Traitor'.
The big thing in this chapter is Garak learning how to flip his Mila-inspired invisibility powers off an on.
Chapter Thirteen
Garak spends this chapter in the Library, studying wormholes. In fact, wormholes are his favorite things to study. Coincidence?
Palandine shows up and explains to Garak that she wants a friend, and she thinks he'd be a good one. Fair enough.
Ha ha! Palandine thinks that people who make friends by ridiculing them are idiots. I guess she doesn't like tsunderes then.
After Gym, Garak gets to talk with Eight. :3
This is interesting, at the end of the year, there's some sort of mock battle tournament, presided over by the older students. Gruff voice is one of those and it seems that he's organizing a little coup. He wants Garak on his side.
Gruff voice's name is Barkan Lokar. Doesn't ring a bell.
Palandine says Cardassian ridges are some sort of natural armour. I don't know, they look to be mostly cartilage and the bones I've seen look very thin and fragile. I don't know how much protection they'd be in a fight... maybe the eye ridges would cushion a blow to the eye socket, but the neck looks useless. Maybe if it was all cartilage it could work, but if you were being strangled, you'd probably break those little bones.
Chapter Fourteen
We're back on the station now. Garak gets in a fight with a Klingon and manages to trap in in a tube, where he find out the Klingon is claustrophobic as well and he makes a new friend, sort of. At least he got a promise from the guy to never use 'spoonhead' again.
Chapter Fifteen
This chapter is mostly a tactical briefing where the older students and Garak go over their plans for the Competition. The big kid reminded me of Tain... I think Garak is underestimating him.
The older students want Garak to lead a small force into the enemy stronghold, after teaching them his Mila-cloak trick.
The rest of the chapter is Garak getting Eight onside and them going over their own plans for their little strike force. It's kinda cute.

Date: 2011-03-01 06:14 pm (UTC)Chapter 12:
Aw, poor lonely little Garak. Brilliant people are always doomed to loneliness. So if nothing else, this prooves how amazing Garak is. Oh yes. Good thing he has Mila, though. Good little lizard.
And good on Garak for scaring the other kids shitless with his crazy stealth skills. :oP Made me grin.
Chapter 13:
Another reason to grin is Garak's interest in wormholes. And I am trying really desperately not to think dirty thoughts... Okay... success so far. But there's much to post yet!
This is just such a meaty chapter in many ways. It opens up on much more of the political workings of the school, not to mention Cardassian society. Also a teeny tiny bit of info on the sexuality which we already saw in canon. I loved it.
It's also a deep look into Garak's emotions and his budding affection for Palandine. And there is definitely something going on with her and Charaban. The plot thickens.
Chapter 14:
The jump in time gets me confused every time. Especially when it breaks so far away from the letter-format it began with.
Anyway, lovely surprise appearance by Chief O'Brien. And helping Garak, even! I love it!
I can't help but wonder, though, when exactly this is supposed to be set in the series? If it's after season 5, I have a hard time imagining that Garak would flee into any kind of small space. He'd find some other means of escape to avoid facing his worst fears and being paralyzed in the middle of an emergency.
Chapter 15:
Back at the preparations for the contest-thing. For such a long chapter it reveals surprisingly little new information. Some nice bonding with Eight and more of the political system being fleshed out. Just makes me wanna read more, which is a good quality in a book, I guess. ;o)
Onwards!

Date: 2011-03-02 03:16 am (UTC)Did you see? We've got a new member,
I must say, I'm really starting to ship Eight/Ten, even with the mysterious Palandine hanging around. I bet you're right about her being somewhat involved with Gruff, maybe she's his ex-girlfriend or something, or maybe a cousin. It doesn't seem like she's romantically interested in Garak, just interested in him as a person.
I liked that Chief was helping Garak. Often, in fic and stuff, the writers have the Chief being not too fond of Garak, what with him not trusting Cardassians and probably a bit protective of Dr. Bashir. It's nice to see that they can be friendly.
Would you be interested in the next 4 chapters this weekend?
